Making Progress
We are finally making some progress here on the homestead. We still do not have any animals but that will happen in due time. We have however been doing our research on which animals to get first as well as what variety! We are torn between chickens and rabbits for our first. Chickens we will get as chicks and they will need lots of care and a coop as well as feed supplies. Most of what we will need we currently have here on the property. From the old tin to the wood Jay was able to save from work and even a bit of online used sight searching we were able to find some needed items for when the chickens come. For rabbits we will need two cages batterers and food. They seem to be the cheaper way to go and they will begin producing food in as little as three months. Chickens will not begin to give us eggs for around six months. I feel a pros and cons list coming soon!
No animals? Then how are things progressing, you ask? Well, we also have that garden. Remember? Yea! We have been diligently working to get the 1600 square foot garden area ready for planting! Because we all know that time is coming very soon. We have found a company who will bring a dump truck load of mulch for very cheap so we have that scheduled to happen soon. We are also on the hunt for a cheap load of top soil. We were able to get the fence posts we needed to fence the garden so all but where the trucks will drive in, dump and leave is fenced up! It's really starting to look like a garden area! We have priced some cattle panel pieces to make our arched trellises for our vining veggies so now we just need to find a trailer to go pick them up. (Hopefully this weekend)
Another thing we have decided to do outside is convert a bunk bed/ shelf into a mini greenhouse! Video to YouTube coming soon! We were given the shelf from a friend who is currently moving and I saw the potential in it when I was asked if I wanted it. It's amazing how easily you can take one thing and transform it into another with a little imagination, dedication and work! The shelf had particle board for the shelves so we removed those and plant to attach fencing and cover it in 3m clear plastic wrap! It is also very heavy so we won't need to worry about any wind knocking it over and destroying all of our hard work.
Now outside has not been the only progress we are making around the homestead. Let's talk about inside! Remember all those plants covering my counter tops? Well sense it is time to start our summer plants indoors I needed more room ad honestly our spring plants should already be planted into the ground but....... Our weather has been insane with all this polar vortex and winter chill so I was afraid to plant and ruin all of my seedlings as well as the seeds directly sown so I opted to wait a while longer. This waiting has cramped my counters even more and also put a halt to my summer starts. Our plants were getting leggy and cramped up on that counter with all the overcast days and my peppers just wouldn't stay warm enough to germinate.
We broke down. We ordered a seedling heat mat for our poor pepper seeds so they would be able to (fingers crossed) germinate and give us some luscious pepper plants. While we were at it we ordered some grow lights and a mini fan to help those little leggy seedlings grow to their full potential in an outside like feel! We converted part of our panty into our new grow room so that we can free up some space on the counter for new seeds to be planted as well as to help those that can not yet be put out due to the cold weather. Once we have the mini greenhouse finished we will move them out their once true leaves come in and the temp inside the greenhouse is suitable for the plants. We have been working a ton lately but we still have so much more to do. This is our update for now but not for long! Much more to come in the next few weeks and a BIG garden reveal as well!! Don't forget to check out our YouTube channel and Instagram for more updates and videos and as always have a good time! Bye guys!
