The Rain Came Tumbling Down

Well it has been a few days sense my last post so let me tell you what I have done in that time. Here in Arkansas we practically grow rocks. With that being said picking rocks out of a 1600 square foot space has been a task. I still have about a third of the garden space to clear of rocks (well most of the big ones at least). I tried recruiting my kids to help me out but that didn't last very long. Go figure if you ask them to play with rocks that's when they decide they don't want to. Just my luck! I'm pretty sure the more I walk through the garden space the more rocks I uncover. There are rocks on top of rocks on top of rocks! Needless to say I slacked off when the rain came in. The mud was probably the best time for me to get out there and find the rocks like washed up treasure and dig out the deep thick roots that we had trouble removing but I slacked off and spent time trying to finish my well pump house.

Let me tell you, this pump house has been in the making for about a year now and it is still not one hundred percent finished. We have been using materials that were found, donated and fairly cheap to get it built. It stands about eight feet tall six feet deep and eleven feet wide. We have the base flooring, frame, outside raw walls, insulation and the roof mostly shingled done. We are working on getting the inside walls put up so we can build some shelves to hold some yard equipment. We also need to finish up the shingles as well as get some siding put around the outside. We have some extra tin from those tin sheds I have mentioned before so we measured out how much we would need to cover the entire outside of the pump house and gathered them up. We have just enough to use them as our siding and give the pump house a rustic look as well. We may paint it later this year if we decide to match it with our house but for now the slightly rusted old metal will suffice. We began to work on that but with the rain and the freezing temperatures we were unable to get that project finished. We will pick that back up this weekend (weather permitting).

Around here the winter is just now starting to set in. We have had more rain and temperatures up into the fifties but down into the teens at night so trying to get work done hasn't been easy. We continue to try though. We have lots of projects going on around our yard right now so we stay pretty busy. Never a dull moment here at Good Time Holler! So I've mentioned the garden, the chicken coop, and now the pump house but we also have some clearing going on and we are trying to level up some area for the kids and then maybe we can start on an area for some goats! We also have plans to fix up an old two story play house that was given to us for the kids. We want to find a way to connect it to a tree and make it a one of a kind fort/tree house! We also have some really cool plans for a wrap around porch and patios! If you all would like I will post up dates on all of the yard renovations as well as the garden! Just let me know!

I also went ahead and got some of my brassicas started indoors as well as some onions sense it is time here in zone 7A to get those started. I started with a mixture of potting soil and composted manure and used some old toilet paper rolls cut in half. These make great starters because they are small, you are recycling, and they are biodegradable so when it is time for transplanting you just stick the entire thing into the ground where you are planting them without disturbing the plants fragile root system. Make sure when staring your seeds to keep them moist and I place them in a warm area until they sprout and then move them into a sunny location making sure to watch the outside temperatures. If it gets too cold it can stunt the growth of the plant. I started my seeds a few days ago and some are already sprouting! Seeing those baby sprouts just fill my heart with joy! I am so excited for Spring time, how about you?
