Yearning for the Spring

I am waiting patiently for the spring to arrive so that I can finally dig into some gardening once more. This year we have big plans! After a small and unplanned great start to gardening this past summer I fell in love. I watched videos and scoured the internet for as much information as I could intake about gardening. I may have seemed to most people as obsessive because I went to check the garden as many as five times a day! It just amazed me so much! Every single time I checked I saw new growth, be it the small buds growing on the watermelon vines or the small fruits forming under the newly closed pepper plants.

This winter has only just begun where I live, but we are taking the time to plan out our next and much larger garden. We want to eventually be able to grow most of our own vegetables, fruits and spices right here at home. Being first time gardeners we actually learned a ton in our first attempt. We learned how to can and freeze some vegetables to save for the winter as well as how to dehydrate and turn peppers into spices. We also learned that there will be mishaps when it comes to growing plants. We were plagued by what we believe to be black rot and lost a few very large watermelons and an entire vine of cucumbers. We learned that square foot gardening isn't for us because when we got hit with the blight it passed from plant to plant all too quickly and wiped out more than we had anticipated.

This spring has been on my mind a ton. I am ready for it to make an appearance, especially sense I am a very cold person. I ordered all of my seeds this past fall for our spring crops and I even planted some fall crops when the seeds arrived. Unfortunately we didn't reap what we had sewn because the rabbits beet us to the punch. (Pun intended) When watching the videos I had mistakenly become addicted to, I found that there was so much more than just tomatoes and cucumbers etc, but that each vegetable had many variations unknown to those who have only dreamed of a garden like myself. This small tidbit of information intrigued me so I began more research and found that most seed vendors have stories and the history to how a fruit or vegetable came to be and where it originated.
To those who have dreamed of starting a garden and just haven't yet, I highly suggest doing so! It is not too late. Spring is right around the corner so get your research on and I suggest reading some of the histories behind the insanely cool vegetable variations that catch your eye when shopping for seeds! Let me know what you think about my first blog and what you plan to plant this spring. Also if you like my blog follow it so you can see whats new!
